In the late eighteenth century Dr. Mond had commissioned Richter to catalogue
his collection of works of art. This magnificent book was the result.

"So many repetitions and variations of this composition by pupils of Leonardo exist that
it is reasonable to suppose that it is founded on a lost painting or cartoon by his hand."
